Delving the Deeps of Valuria
Valuria consists of three main kingdoms: Galloway, Rothdan and Uldeer. Each is sovereign and independent from one another. They have warred with one another at times, but are, as of now, relatively peaceful.
Uldeer, owing to the days of Reynar of the Kellen tribe, is a militocracy. The current ruler is Lord General Aloysius Winston. The seat of the government can be found in the capital city of Dunmoore. Each city of appreciable size has an army base that acts as an outpost and a militia. Martial law is the order of the kingdom. The foot soldiers of Uldeer can be found acting as local constabulary all across the land. The government is neither totalitarian nor malicious and most residents are happy with the current status quo.
While the Lord General is, indeed, the supreme head of the military of Uldeer, his position means he must deal with issues not directly tied to military actions. To this end, he has three advisers that are not part of his military chain of command and act as separate entities from the military. The first is the Duke of Coin that handles the finances of the realm. Currently, Duke Albert Kinna is the Duke of Coin. Secondly is Duke of Knowledge. The Duke of Knowledge gathers information for the Lord General, both domestic and foreign, and advises him on actions of war and diplomacy. The Duke of Knowledge is sometimes referred to as “The Whisper King” as his job sometimes allows him secrets very few are privy to. The current Duke of Knowledge is Jonathon Yor. Lastly is the Duke of Commons. The Duke of Commons ostensibly deals with the people of the realm and caters to their needs. They are also advisers to the Lord General in matters not dealing with finances or state secrets, a catch-all if you will, that handles many mundane situations the other two Dukes feel is beneath them. The current Duke of Commons is actually a Duchess, Duchess Annabelle Llewellyn. Aside from these three, the Lord General has a military Duke that is his direct junior officer in the military, the second in command of the Army of Uldeer (the ‘Army’ also includes a sizable naval division). This post is labeled Duke of the Army but carries the rank of Colonel. The current Duke of the Army is Colonel Franklin Talbot.
Ascendancy to the position of Lord General is a rather simple procedure. The day a Lord General assumes his station, he names three of his Dukes with the fourth being already obvious as his rank in the army prescribes (i.e. The Duke of the Army will be whomever is currently in that position). The Lord General then names one of them as his successor. At anytime, the Lord General must have a stated successor, but he may change it at any time. Likewise, each Duke (or Duchess) has named a successor and so on. Currently, Lord General Winston has stated his Duke of Common, Duchess Llewellyn, to be his successor. This has caused quite a stir in Uldeer since rarely has the Duke of Commons been appointed and rarer still has the realm had a female Lord General, the last time being over two-hundred years ago. However, Lord General Winston is a young man by normal standards for a Lord General, he is only 42, and many believe he will be Lord General for many years to come.
Uldeer is broken into regions and each region has a commander, a Lord Major. The regions are simply stated as the North, the South and the Midlands. The South’s headquarters are found in Illisdale and the Lord Major there is Lord Major Canos Fielding. The Midlands region is headquartered in Dunmoore and is lead by Lord Major Garreth Summers. The North region is headquartered in Honalee and is led by Lord Major Harold Davenport. The next Duke of the Army will come from one of these ranks.
Being a militaristic society, Uldeer has very strict laws and swift punishment for breaking them. Honalee, Dunmoore and Iliisdale are the most severe, as they house headquarters for the government, but the laws get a little less restrictive as one moves away from these towns. Technically, the Treble Isles is a part of Uldeer, but many see it as a sovereign land free of Uldeer’s laws, including Lord General Winston himself. He has left the Isles alone and allowed them to govern themselves, a tradition that goes back at least a dozen Lord Generals. The current leader of The Treble Isles is Governor Lincoln Metigrew. Governor Metigrew is a native of the Isles and rarely answers to the Lord General. The Isles are almost the polar opposite of the Uldeer, as the land is chaotic and lawless in many ways. Corruption is rampant in the Isles and a few hundred gold goes much further than a writ or title. Uldeer has a naval base there, but even that is considered a fairly lawless place. Sailors retire to the Isles quite regularly.
